Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 17, 2026

1. Overview

OdorWatch ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights as a California resident under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). OdorWatch is designed to be a privacy-respecting community tool — we do not require you to create an account or provide any personally identifiable information to use the Site.

2. Information We Collect

2a. Information You Voluntarily Submit

When you submit an odor report through the Google Form embedded on or linked from this Site, you provide:

  • Neighborhood / area — selected from a dropdown menu (no street address or precise location is collected)
  • Smell type — a category selected from a list
  • Severity rating — a number from 1 to 5
  • Time of observation — approximate time of day
  • Whether the smell is ongoing — a yes/no answer

No name, email address, phone number, IP address, or other personally identifiable information is requested or required in the report form. Reports are anonymous by design.

2b. Automatically Collected Information

When you visit OdorWatch, our analytics provider (Umami) may collect basic, anonymized usage data including:

  • Pages visited and time spent on the Site
  • General geographic region (country/state level only)
  • Device type and browser type
  • Referring website

Umami is a privacy-focused analytics tool that does not use cookies, does not track individuals across sites, and does not collect or store personally identifiable information. No advertising tracking or third-party profiling occurs on this Site.

3. How We Use Your Information

The data collected through odor reports is used solely for the following community purposes:

  • Displaying anonymized report pins on the community map
  • Generating aggregated trend charts (daily, weekly, monthly odor activity)
  • Helping the community and local authorities identify odor patterns and hotspots

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your submitted data with any third party for commercial purposes. Aggregated, non-identifiable trend data may be shared with local government agencies (such as Placer County Air Pollution Control District or the City of Roseville) to support environmental monitoring efforts.

4. Data Storage and Third-Party Processors

Odor report data is stored in Google Sheets, a service provided by Google LLC. Google acts as a data processor on our behalf and is subject to Google's own privacy policies and data processing terms. By submitting a report, you acknowledge that your response data will be stored in Google's infrastructure.

The Site is hosted on Manus infrastructure. Map functionality is provided by Google Maps. These services may collect standard server log data (such as IP addresses) as part of normal web infrastructure operation, governed by their respective privacy policies.

5. Cookies

OdorWatch does not use advertising cookies or tracking cookies. Umami Analytics operates without cookies. Google Maps may use cookies as part of its standard operation. You can manage cookie preferences through your browser settings.

6. Your Rights Under California Law (CCPA)

As a California resident, you have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • Right to Know — you may request information about what personal data we have collected about you.
  • Right to Delete — you may request deletion of any personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights.

Because reports are submitted anonymously without any identifying information, we are generally unable to link a specific report to a specific individual. If you believe you can identify a report you submitted and wish to have it removed, please contact us at [email protected] with details about the report (approximate date, neighborhood, and smell type) and we will remove it promptly.

7. Children's Privacy

OdorWatch is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted information through this Site, please contact us and we will remove it.

8. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the information collected through this Site. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of data submitted through third-party services such as Google Forms.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
